On this day in 2005 Archbishop Daniel Buechlein officially opened the cause for the canonization of the First Bishop of Vincennes, Simon Brute\u00a8. Here is the text from the September 16, 2005<\/a> edition of the ‘Criterion’<\/em>, announcing the “cause”<\/p>\n

The Cause of Canonization of
\nBishop Simon Brute is opened<\/p>\n

Founder of diocese now may be called “\u02dcServant of God’

Underneath the appearance of paperwork, signatures and seals, a moment of historical significance for the archdiocese occurred this week.<\/p>\n

On the morning of Sept. 12, Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, along with other officials and the postulator, Andrea Ambrosi of Rome, opened the Cause of Canonization of the Servant of God Simon Brute, the founding bishop the Diocese of Vincennes, which became the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.<\/p>\n

“\u0153It’s a historic day because it formally now inaugurates the Cause for the potential canonization of our first bishop,”\u009d Archbishop Buechlein said.”It’s a very satisfying thing to be able to refer to him now as the Servant of God Simon Brute.”\u009d<\/p>\n

The opening session consisted mostly in the taking of oaths on behalf of all those who will be involved in the Cause.<\/p>\n

The presence of the postulator is necessary because it is he who will officially advocate on behalf of the Cause.<\/p>\n

The next step in the process is for the archdiocese”\u201dand members of the historical commission and theological commission of the Cause”\u201dto aid Ambrosi in presenting to the Vatican evidence that Bishop Brute led a life of heroic virtue.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It is interesting that an article appeared in America Magazine<\/a> which calls for an easier path for canonization, particularly for laypersons. The cost of hiring a postulator, researching historical documents etc. is very high — so much so that, in the case of Bishop Brut\u00c3\u00a8, the Archdiocese solicits<\/a> help for funding the cause. That is one reason why America<\/em> is calling for an easier way to sainthood.<\/p>\n

Of course, the best thing to do (and in the end official recognition isn’t as important) is to pray for the intercession of Bishop Brut\u00c3\u00a8. The Archdiocese has afforded two ‘official<\/em>‘ prayers. One for his cause and the other for his intercession:<\/p>\n

\nHeavenly Father,
\nsource of all that is holy,
\nin every age, you raise up
\nmen and women who live lives
\nof heroic love and service.
\nYou have blessed your Church
\nthrough the life of Simon Brute,
\nfirst bishop of Vincennes
\nand spiritual director
\nto St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
\nThrough his prayer, his intellect,
\nhis love, and his pastoral care,
\nSimon Brute formed future priests
\nand guided your Church
\nin the early days of our country.
\nIf it be your will,
\nmay he be proclaimed a saint.
\nWe ask this through Jesus Christ,
\nour Lord.<\/p>\n

and the prayer for intercession:<\/p>\n

Father in heaven,
\nyou give us every blessing
\nand shower us with your grace
\nthrough our savior, Jesus Christ,
\nand the working of the Holy Spirit.
\nIf it be according to your will,
\nglorify your servant Simon Brute
\nby granting the favor I now request
\nthrough his prayerful intercession:
\n(Mention your request.)
\nI make this prayer confidently
\nthrough Jesus Christ, our Lord.<\/p>\n
