{"id":712,"date":"2010-07-22T12:21:37","date_gmt":"2010-07-22T17:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/indianacatholic.mwweb.org\/icath\/?p=712"},"modified":"2010-07-22T12:21:37","modified_gmt":"2010-07-22T17:21:37","slug":"bishop-bazin-ordained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indianacatholic.mwweb.org\/?p=712","title":{"rendered":"Bishop Bazin Ordained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>     On this day, July 22, in 1822, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Stephen_Bazin\">John Stephen Bazin<\/a> (Jean Etienne) was ordained a priest in the Cathedral in Lyon, France.<\/p>\n<p>He came to the United States in 1830 at the invitation of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Portier\">Bishop Michael Portier<\/a>, the first bishop of <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 150\"  src=\"https:\/\/indianacatholic.mwweb.org\/bazin.jpg\" \/>Mobile, Alabama, a fellow Frenchman who had emigrated to the United States in 1817.<\/p>\n<p>Bazin served in the Mobile diocese for nearly 17 years when the Provincial Council of Baltimore recommended him to succeed Bishop Hailandiere.<\/p>\n<p>Although his time in Vincennes was short, Bazin brought a great deal of relief to the people of the Diocese of Vincennes, especially the clergy and the Sisters of Providence who suffered under Hailandiere&#8217;s insistence on complete authority.<\/p>\n<p>One of Bazin&#8217;s accomplishments while in Mobile was the recruitment of Christian Brothers to teach in the schools and the Jesuits to staff the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shc.edu\/about-shc\/history-of-the-college\">Spring Hill College<\/a>.
