State of the Diocese in 1846

At the very tender age of 12 years old, the Diocese of Vincennes was listed in the Indiana Annual Register and Pocket Manual for 1846.

It is interesting to read the names and locations of those clergy who have become so familiar to us. Here is the entire list…

You can read and download the book by going to Google Books Click on the image here to see a larger one.

Of course, Bishop Hailandiere was the bishop and you will notice the presence of Frs. Vabret, Bellier Chasse and others who were stationed at what was known as St. Gabriel’s college. They were members of the Eudist Fathers, also known as the Congregation of Jesus and Mary Some stayed on and become priests of the diocese and others drifted, either back to France or to New Orleans.

Also note the presence of Fr. Sorin, founder of the University of Notre Dame, listed in St. Joseph County.
