June 11th, marks the 201st anniversary of the ordination of Simon Brut. Or is it? Well, it more than likely is the correct date, but I recently found a discrepancy in some reliable sources.
According to Sister Mary Salesia Godecker, Bruté was ordained on June 10, 1808 at the church of St. Sulpice in Paris. He was ordained by the Right Reverend Andre’, the retired Bishop of Quimper. His first Mass was celebrated at the altar of the Blessed Virgin in the Seminary of St. Sulpice on Trinity Sunday, June 11, 1808. June 11th actually fell on a Saturday in 1808, so Sister Godecker’s date is probably incorrect.
Brutés “Memoirs” by Archbishop Bayley say that he was ordained on the Saturday before Trinity Sunday in 1808. That would mean JUNE 11th, according to a perpetual calendar.
Finally, the necrology of the Society of St. Sulpice, of which Brut was once a member, says he was ordained on June 10, 1808. That would have been a Friday in 1808.
The Archdiocese of Indianapolis (formerly Vincennes) celebrates the ordination on June 11th.
