History repeats”¦ sort of”¦

In the Douglas Adams novel, “Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” it is said:

“History is an illusion caused by the passage of time and time is an illusion caused by the passage of history.”

Yesterday, January 14th, Pope Benedict named Fr. Christopher Coyne, of the Archdiocese of Boston, to be the new Auxiliary Bishop of Indianapolis. Why is that on this ‘historical’ site? Because it has been 77 years since Indianapolis has had an Auxiliary, the last being Cardinal Joseph Ritter who was named as an auxiliary to Bishop Joseph Chartrand.

It was also the anniversary of the consecration of fourth Bishop of Vincennes, Maurice de St. Palais in 1849 by Bishop Pius Miles, OP, of Nashville, assisted by Coadjutor Bishop Martin John Spalding of Louisville and Very Reverend Hippolyte Du Pontavice, vicar general of Vincennes.
